With the festive season fast approaching, it is once again time to start planning for next year’s holidays. To begin, here is an overview of the public holidays in Singapore in 2020.

Compared to 2019, 2020 looks to be more promising with 7 long weekends. Additionally, 2 public holidays will fall on a Saturday thus giving us 2 days of off-in-lieu. These can then be used to create 2 more long weekends or used together with a long weekend to travel without having to use any annual leave.

For weekend getaways

  • Chinese New Year: 26 January (following day will be a public holiday)
  • Good Friday: 10 April
  • Labour day: 1 May
  • Hari Raya Puasa: 24 May (following day will be a public holiday)
  • Hari Raya Haji: 31 July
  • National Day: 9 August (following day will be a public holiday)
  • Christmas Day: 25 December
  • We've written plenty of articles on short holiday ideas (see: 10 Last Minute Getaways For The Long Weekend and 4 Affordable Holidays For The Extra-Long Weekend In August). However, if those holiday destinations do not interest you, here are 2 other destinations to consider.

    1. Phu Quoc, Vietnam

An up and coming destination, Phu Quoc island is the ideal getaway for travelers looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. A 1 hour flight from Ho Chi Minh, surround yourself with nature in Phu Quoc with a plethora of activities available for all types of travellers.

    2. Luang Prabang, Laos

With Silkair merging with SingaporeAirlines and Scoot, this flight route has now been transferred from Silkair to Scoot. This has significantly lowered the cost of flight tickets making traveling to Laos even more affordable now. Spend some time in the UNESCO town of Luang Prabang or take a day trip out to the Kuang Si waterfalls. Known for its milky blue waters, this three levelled falls will definitely be the highlight of your trip to Laos.

    For a long holiday

2020 is a good year for longer holidays with 3 travel periods you can utilise.

Travelling over any of these 3 periods will allow you to enjoy a 10 to 11 days holiday with just 4 to 5 days of annual leave taken.
