Addressing your basic insurance needs:

  • Hospitalisation – The foundation of your protection needs, ensure that your hospitalisation needs are addressed before looking for other types of coverage. We suggest getting a private hospital plan if you can afford it and downgrade if there is the need to do so in future. This is because it will be easier to get covered now when you are healthy, and to downgrade in future if there is the need to do so.
  • Death – Protect your dependents and have a safety net against the unknowns in life. This coverage is recommended when you are actively drawing a salary and have dependents that are financially reliant on you. Consider a term life insurance plan to address your death coverage needs.
  • Critical illness – Provides a lump sum pay-out when diagnosed with a covered critical illness condition. Coverage is intended to supplement daily expenses or used to replace your income during your recovery period. Get critical illness coverage as a standalone plan or add on a critical illness rider to your term or whole life plan. Reach out to us to find out which option is more suitable for you.
  • Long-term care – Payouts from CareShield Life will commence when you are unable to perform 3 out of 6 activities of daily living (ADL). Supplement CareShield Life to receive higher monthly pay-outs if you are disabled and unable to perform 1 or 2 ADLs as specified in your policy. Use your MediSave to pay for your CareShield Life supplements up to $600 per calendar year per insured person.

  • 💡 Tip: If you are unsure about how much coverage you need,

According to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)’s Basic Financial Planning Guide, individuals are recommended to get:

  • Death, and Total Permanent Disability (TPD) coverage equivalent to 9 times their annual income; and
  • Critical Illness coverage equivalent to 4 times their annual income

  • Other factors to consider when planning your coverage:

  • Your dependents and years of support required
  • Your financial situation including expense, assets & liabilities
  • Existing insurance coverage
  • Get up to $368 when you trust FSMOne with your protection needs. Simply make an appointment and get covered for any of the four eligible protection categories. Let us help you get your ideal coverage.

For simplicity, this article will not elaborate on these other factors. Click here to reach out to us to find out more, or if you would like to get your personalised insurance portfolio.

Our recommendation to address your basic insurance needs

To better illustrate how much you can expect to pay for your insurance coverage, we created a sample portfolio for the following profile:

  • Age 30 (date of birth 1 January 1995), non-smoker Singaporean male residing in Singapore.
  • Recently married, no children.
  • In good health with no existing health conditions.
  • Earns the median gross monthly income of $5,500 (according to the 2024 Gross Monthly Income from Employment). Assuming an annual income of $66,000 (equivalent to 12 months’ salary).
  • Here is our recommended coverage that takes into consideration the profile’s age and current life stage:

    Product Type

    Recommended coverage

    Rationale

    Hospitalisation
Start with a private hospital plan and add on a rider to lower the co-payment required if you can afford this. It will be easier to get covered now when you are healthy, and to downgrade in future should you need to do so.
    Term Life
    $594,000
Equivalent to 9 times annual income
    Critical Illness
    $264,000
Equivalent to 4 times annual income
    Long-Term Care
To maximise the $600 per year MediSave additional withdrawal limit for higher monthly pay-outs, and to allow pay-outs to start when you are unable to perform 1 or 2 ADLs. This will enhance the coverage you have with CareShield Life where pay-outs commence with the inability to perform 3 out of 6 ADLs.

As shown in the table above, getting adequate coverage does not have to be costly. MAS’s basic financial planning guide recommends allocating no more than 15% of your income (after CPF contributions are deducted) on insurance protection. For someone with an annual income of $52,800 after CPF deductions, the total annual premiums for our suggested insurance portfolio amounts to $5,249.99 which is approximately 10% of the annual income and falls comfortably within the recommended 15% guideline.

Reach out to us if you are spending more than 15% of your annual income on your insurance policies, or if you think you are paying too much for your insurance.
