Key Takeaways from ETFestival 2021

FSMOne’s ETFestival 2021 recently concluded on 15 May 2021. This year’s event took on the theme of “Explore & Take Flight”, bringing viewers on a virtual flight to discover the world of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).

The three different segments of the event, “Pre-flight”, “In-flight” and “Destination” satisfies the nostalgia viewers had from travelling pre-COVID-19 by drawing parallels between travelling and investing in ETFs. Held on 15 May 2021 (Saturday) from 10am to 5pm, the event was packed with presentations and activities with the aim of providing viewers with a deeper understanding on ETFs, and to shed insight on the various markets and sectors investors could look at when investing in ETFs.

Pre-flight

FSMOne.com General Manager Jean Paul Wong kick-started the event with the “Pre-flight” segment, where he introduced the roles of ETFs in an investor’s portfolio. The other presentations in this segment gave an overview on the market’s response to COVID-19 and its recovery, as well as a beginner’s guide on doing your first ETF investment.

Yeo Huishi, our Stocks and ETFs Anaylst also introduced the 2021 edition of FSMOne ETF Focus List, which we believe could serve as a starting point for beginner ETF investors.

In-flight

In our second “In-flight” segment, our different speakers and panellists shared different strategies to help make investors’ ETF investing journey a smooth-sailing one.

We started with a panel discussion on fixed income ETFs, where Weiren from iFAST Singapore, Adrian from CSOP Asset Management Limited and Calvin from Nikko Asset Management Asia Limited discussed insights on having an allocation of fixed income in portfolios. The panelists also touched on how Chinese government bonds could be a safe allocation for investors although they do have to watch out for currency risks.

In the subsequent presentation, Weiren shared about the benefits of utilising a Regular Savings Plans (RSP) strategy, which included requiring little capital to start and focusing on dollar cost averaging rather than timing the market. Robin from State Street Global Advisors then wrapped up this segment with a presentation on how commodities exposure in investors’ portfolios, and specifically gold ETFs, could provide investors with a good hedge against inflation risks.

Destination

The final segment brought viewers on a tour to explore different global sectors with a special hour dedicated to “sight-seeing” in China.

Steven Cheung from iShares BlackRock and Gladys Liu from Ell Investment delved into a presentation on Asian high yield, which they believe still has a lot of room and potential for growth in the fixed income ETF space, especially with the rapid COVID-19 recovery seen across Asia.

Of course, a flight is never complete without in-flight entertainment, even if it is a virtual flight. Jermyn Wong from Nikko Asset Management Asia Limited gave viewers his take on two “entertainment” related topics, including eGames and global internet companies.

Ferlyn Tan from iFAST Singapore then covered the topic of global financials, where the expectations of rapidly rising inflation rates could lead to rate hikes, which will see growth in global financials.

In a special “China Hour” segment, the next few presentations led by our China “guides” were all centered around China’s different sectors, including some of the key China sectors that we believe investors should pay more attention to, namely: semiconductors, real estate, healthcare and financials.

Dawn Leong from Lion Global Investors wrapped up all the ideas on China opportunities with China technology, introducing investors to the SGX-listed Lion-OCBC Securities Hang Seng Tech ETF.

Lastly, ETFestival 2021’s presentations concluded with a Q&A panel session where many viewers’ burning questions were discussed and answered.
